Rayo Vallecano was unable to come out of its Liga BBVA matchday 12 clash against Real Madrid with anything. Carlo Ancelotti’s men got off to a perfect start when Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the third minute, which kick started what looked like being an easy day at the office for the Whites.
Rayo pushed high up the pitch in search of an equaliser, leaving the back line quite exposed.Gareth Bale was able to take advantage of the space on the half hour mark when he set up Karim Benzema to score the visitors’ second of the night. Not long after the restart, the Welshman assisted in another goal, this time teeing up Ronaldo, who made no mistake to effectively kill off the game at 3-0.
However, Rayo quickly cut the deficit to 3-2 thanks to two penalties in short succession that Jonathan Viera was at hand to dispatch of, swinging the tie wide open with over 30 minutes left on the clock. Paco Jémez’s men were resurgent after getting back into the game, and kept looking for an equaliser until the very end. However, all three points went to Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
