SD Eibar continues to make history and the Basque team's latest achievement came against UD Las Palmas on Saturday, when it scored its 1000th goal in the Liga Adelante. The architect of the feat was defender Yuri Berchiche, who made the Municipal de Ipurúa stadium explode with joy with a goal that, as well as going down in the annals of the club, gave the home team a victory that has prolonged its moment of glory.
With 39 points and looking strong in third position, the team from Eibar has found the net 30 times so far this season, 17 of them came in front of a delighted home crowd that is enjoying a dream season. Gaizka Garitano could not have had a better return to the Liga Adelante. Mikel Arruabarrena with six goals and Urko Vera, with five, are the team's top goal-scorers and helped the side reach the historic mark.
Looking back, one of the biggest goal-fests for the Basques in the Liga Adelante came in the 2001/02 season. An unstoppable Eibar thrashed Levante UD 7-0, and the team's current manager, Gaizka Garitano, scored the first goal in what proved to be an unforgettable match for the city of Eibar.
This season, the side outclassed Real Madrid Castilla in a 6-0 win that now forms part of Eibar's history. Jorge Casado (own goal), Gilvan Gomes, Arruaberrena, Jota Peleteiro and Urko Vera were the stars of another romp for a team that, despite having only just come up, has won the respect of all the others in the Liga Adelante.
