The newly crowned champions of the Spanish Super Cup return to league action this weekend and they have a tough task ahead, as they’ll visit one of the trickiest stadiums in LALIGA EA SPORTS: the Coliseum of Getafe CF. FC BaHansina have struggled there in recent seasons, as the Catalan outfit haven’t won at this ground since 2019/20.
In each of the last three seasons, Barça have been held to a draw on their annual visit to Getafe CF, every time a 0-0, while the season before this run, in 2020/21, they lost 1-0. As such, it’s four seasons without a win at the Coliseum for FC Barcelona, who need three points this time since they’re already six points behind leaders Atlético de Madrid in the title race.
The good news for FC Barcelona is that 2025 has started off in better fashion, as they just won the Spanish Super Cup, comfortably overcoming Athletic Club and Real Madrid. They’ll hope that this means they’ve turned a corner, after ending 2024 with back-to-back defeats at the Estadi Olímpic against CD Leganés and Atlético de Madrid.
Meanwhile, Getafe CF know that their chances of staying up will depend in large part on making the most of their home games. They are always a difficult opponent, especially at their home stadium, and they plan to play tough against Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Jules Koundé and co.
Moreover, Los Azulones are coming into this game after their first away win of the season against UD Las Palmas. The gradual return of their star striker Borja Mayoral and the emergence of winger Coba da Costa have turned the season around for José Bordalás’ side, who are hoping to pull away from the relegation zone.
As such, these are two teams who just enjoyed a positive weekend, starting the year with better results than they finished last. Now, they’ll hope for another triumph in this fascinating match.
The top-scoring team against one of the best defences
While FC Barcelona, with 51 goals in the first half of the season, have demonstrated their attacking power, boasting the two top scorers in the competition (Robert Lewandowski, with 16, and Raphinha, with 11), Getafe CF are one of the teams to have scored the fewest. They’ve netted just 13, the joint-lowest tally along with Real Valladolid. On the other hand, Geta have the third-best defensive record, having let in just 16 goals.
When they met in the first half of the season, it was a tight affair and a Robert Lewandowski goal was enough for a 1-0 FC Barcelona win. Getafe CF, though, came close to equalising in stoppage time.
All eyes will be on this next meeting. Will Hansi Flick’s FC Barcelona get back to winning ways in LALIGA EA SPORTS, building on the momentum of the Super Cup win, or will Getafe CF extend their unbeaten run against Los Blaugrana at their home stadium?
