Liga Adelante continues to show why it’s one of the best leagues in Europe. The competitiveness and excitement that’s played out every weekend is reflected in the league table, which is getting tighter. The first round of games in 2014 finished with RC Deportivo de La Coruña at the top of the table, even though they could only muster a draw against Real Jaén CF, meaning their rivals – who also couldn’t secure a win in the 20th round of matches – are still within touching distance.
None of the top five in the table won, meaning Real Zaragoza, Córdoba CF and RCD Mallorca took advantage to close the gap on the promotion places. Deportivo were held to a goalless draw at the Nuevo Estadio de La Victoria, unable to capitalise on the defeats suffered by Real Sporting (2-3 against Zaragoza) and RC Recreativo de Huelva (2-0 versus Córdoba).
SD Eibar earned a point in their match against CD Lugo (0-0), in a tie that the Galician side dominated. UD Las Palmas, sixth in the table, could also only draw against Mallorca (2-2), who are one of the beneficiaries of the 20th round of Liga Adelante matches.
At the bottom of the table, Real Madrid Castilla’s run of five games without defeat was ended away to CE Sabadell (3-2). Deportivo Alavés took all three points from Estadio de Los Pajaritos against CD Numancia for the first time in their history thanks to a 0-2 win. Girona FC struck late to earn an important point in their game against SD Ponferradina (1-1).
