The November international break is currently taking place, so there was no LALIGA EA SPORTS action this past week. However, there was a full slate of fixtures in LALIGA HYPERMOTION, as well as other important developments around Spanish football. The main headlines from the past seven days are outlined below.
Real Racing Club extend their lead atop LALIGA HYPERMOTION
At the very top of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, Spanish football’s second division, Real Racing Club won yet again, this time defeating Burgos CF 2-0. That result allowed the club from Santander to extend their lead at the top of the standings, and they now have 36 points after 15 rounds.
Real Oviedo climb into the automatic promotion places
Just behind, there was an Asturian switch-around in second place. Real Sporting entered the most recent matchday in second, but fell out of the automatic promotion positions because of a 2-1 home loss to Granada CF. Their place was taken by local rivals Real Oviedo, who defeated Tenerife CF 3-1 to move into second.
Levante UD make an emotional return home
Another fixture which caught the attention in LALIGA HYPERMOTION this past week was Levante UD vs Elche CF, the first match for Los Granotes since the devastating DANA storm which hit the city of Valencia. Ahead of the match at the Estadi Ciutat de València, which finished 1-1, there were tributes and an emotional moment of remembrance for those who lost their lives.
Joy and despair for Ayoze Pérez
The Spanish national team started the November international break with a victory, defeating Denmark 2-1 away from home on Friday night. Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal and Villarreal CF’s Ayoze Pérez scored the goals for La Roja, but Pérez then suffered a blow by picking up an injury that’ll rule him out of Spain’s next match, which is on Monday against Switzerland in Tenerife, his hometown.
David Alaba makes progress on the training pitch
There is optimism at Real Madrid that David Alaba can finally return from his long-term knee injury in the coming weeks. The Austrian centre-back has been making good progress and has been seen on the training pitches with his teammates. It’s good timing, considering the recent injury suffered by Éder Militão.
Roberto Olabe is leaving Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad confirmed this past week that Roberto Olabe, who has been the club’s director of football since 2018, will leave his position at the end of this season. He was one of the key architects of Real Sociedad’s recent success, with the club regularly qualifying for Europe and winning the 2019/20 Copa del Rey.
RCD Espanyol extend Jofre Carreras’s contract
Jofre Carreras has been one of RCD Espanyol’s best players so far this season, so the Catalan club were delighted to announce this past week that the 23-year-old winger has extended his contract at the RCDE Stadium until 2029.
Two-time Pichichi winner Diego Forlán makes his pro tennis debut
One of the more curious sporting stories of the past week involved two-time Pichichi winner Diego Forlán, who made his debut in professional tennis at the age of 45. The former Villarreal CF and Atlético de Madrid striker has always loved tennis and has been playing more and more in recent months, entering the first round of the doubles draw of the 2024 Uruguay Open, although he and his partner suffered a defeat.
There will be two games on December 18th
New dates and kick-off times were announced this past week for two of the matches that were postponed because of the consequences of the DANA storm in Valencia. The Matchday 12 clash between Villarreal CF and Rayo Vallecano and the Matchday 13 duel between RCD Espanyol and Valencia CF are both scheduled to take place at 21:30 CET on Wednesday December 18th.
A new date is set for the Copa del Rey second round draw
A new date has also been confirmed for the Copa del Rey second round draw. Given that some first round fixtures were also postponed because of the DANA storm, the draw for the second phase has been pushed back and it’ll now take place on Wednesday November 27th.
